About the project

The Northern Star LLC project to develop the Syradasaiskoye deposit involves the creation of a powerful industrial cluster for the production of coal concentrates from coking coals 105–120 km southeast of the village of Dikson in the Taymyr Dolgano-Nenetsky District of Krasnoyarsk Territory (Taymyr Peninsula).

Resource base

The Syradasaiskoye deposit is one of the largest coal deposits in the world. Its resources are estimated at 5 bn tonnes.

Key facilities

The open pit coal mine

The output of the open pit coal mine:

Stage 1: 5 mn tonnes

Stage 2: 10 mn tonnes

The refinery

Commercial grade KZH, K, KO concentrate with a yield of 60–70% and ash content of up to 10%

Infrastructure facilities

A 61-km long motorway

Conveyor transport:

cargo turnover of 5–7 mn tonnes per year

Power plant:

power rating of 30 MW

A rotation camp for staff

The Yenisei Sea port

with a cargo turnover of up to 10 mn tonnes per year

Taimyr Airport

types of aircraft: An-12, An-24, An-26, An-74

Technical solutions

As it implements the project, Northern Star is using cutting-edge mining, refinement and transportation technologies aimed at eliminating environmental risks and minimising human impact on the environment.

A linear-radial type ship loader

with a capacity of 4,000 tonnes of cargo per hour

Key specifications:

  • The technologies used meet all European environmental standards.
  • The machine can be used in cities and towns.
  • The machine doesn't have to be shut down in windy conditions.
  • The machine is assembled at the port after pre-fabrication, components are delivered to the construction site on a barge.

The coal dust power plant

with a capacity of 30 MW

Key specifications:

  • Unique, environmentally friendly fuel burning process.
  • The boilers run on coal dust made from the commercial product obtained as a result of the coal refinement.
  • The power plant utilises unique reverse draft burners to maximise fuel combustion and minimise the amount of ash left over once the fuel has burned up.
  • The power plant comprises several power generation units and the power output can be easily increased by installing and connecting additional power generation units.
  • The ash is collected in a cyclone-type ash capture unit, whose contents are then dumped into a trailer tank and removed from the power plant for disposal.
  • The coal dust and air mixture are burned in a burner that has air and coal dust fed into it.

The main conveyor

(when raw coal production of 10 mn tonnes a year is achieved)

Key specifications:

  • An enclosed product transportation system
  • Coal moves in an enclosed space from start to finish with zero contact with the environment
  • Productivity: 10 mn tonnes a year, about 3,000 tonnes per hour
  • The length of the conveyor belt: 60 km
  • The number of conveyor load-bearing components: 4
  • The conveyor is enclosed along its length
  • Reinforced concrete piles

The Yenisei Sea port

  • Wharf length — 250 metres
  • Connecting dam length — 1,461 metres
  • Territory — 20 ha
  • Depths of up to 16 metres to enable handling of vessels of up to 100,000 tonnes:
  1. First stage: 11 metres
  2. Second stage: 16 metres*

* Provided additional dredging is carried out

  • Cargo handling capacity of 10 mn tonnes:
  1. Stage 1: 5 mn tonnes
  2. Stage 2: 10 mn tonnes
  • A 0.5 mn tonne warehouse, stage 2 — 1 mn tonnes

Finished product logistics

The product is planned to be transported year-round by bulk carriers with a deadweight of ≈100 thousand tonnes.

Technical characteristics of the vessels to be used:

  • width — up to 43 m
  • power — over 14 MW
  • maximum draft — 15 m
  • deadweight — 95–100 thousand tonnes
  • ice class — A1
  • Ice-breaking tugboats of a class of at least Arc6/Icebreaker6
